Despite this, comparative research on the inte-gration of Catalans and Scots in the decision-making of central state institutions is underdeveloped. In this article, based on a setof comparative indicators applied to these two case studies, we will carry out an investigation that allows us to observe the levelof inclusion of Catalonia and Scotland in the main political positions of the central government of the State, as well as in otherstate political institutions of singular importance. To this end, we will analyse quantitatively and qualitatively the participationof Catalans and Scots in the head of government, ministerial portfolios, parliamentary presiding officers and general secretariesof the main state-level parties. Estas movilizan a más de 400 millones de electores, en 27 países y con sistemas electorales diferentes, para elegir al Parlamento transnacional más grande del mundo. El resultado: auge de los partidos populistas de derecha radical con su mejor resultado histórico y pérdida de peso relativo de las principales formaciones europeístas que se han repartido el poder institucional comunitario en los últimos 40 años dibuja un escenario de incertidumbre y con muchos retos para el próximo quinquenio. Este artículo profundiza primero en el contexto en el que se han producido estas elecciones, analizando en retrospectiva la labor de la primera Comisión von der Leyen. Posteriormente se analizan tanto los resultados europeos en su conjunto como para España, mirando a 2024 pero también a 2019. Finalmente se aportan, a modo de conclusiones, los retos de futuro que puede afrontar la Unión.; The European elections were held in June of last year. In excess of 400 million voters were mobilised in 27 countries with disparate electoral systems, with the objective of electing the largest transnational parliament in the world. The result was the ascendance of radical right-wing populist parties, which achieved their best result in history. Concurrently, the relative weight of the main pro-European formations, which have shared the EU’s institutional power over the last 40 years, diminished. This creates a scenario of uncertainty and numerous challenges for the next five years. This article initially examines the context in which these elections occurred, offering a retrospective analysis of the von der Leyen Commission’s tenure. Subse-quently, the article examines the European results in their entirety, as well as the outcomes in Spain. It considers the implications of these results for the forthcoming election in 2024, while also considering the potential impact on the 2019 election. In conclusion, the potential challenges that the Union may face in the future are identified. Asimismo, se contextualizan estas iniciativas para comprender su propósito y alcance, y se aborda la problemática de una cuestión social que persiste en todas las democracias del mundo: la sobrerrepresentación de los hombres en la toma de decisiones políticas. It delves into the main normative initiatives developed at international, national and regional level, with the aim of deepening the impact of the legal framework on the promotion of equality and parity in the political sphere.
