La poesía satírica de Juan Geómetra

Abstract

En el presente artículo se estudian los poemas de Juan Geómetra transmitidos en los manuscritos Vat. Pal. gr. 367, fols. 140r-140v y 143r-143v, del s. XIV, y Athous 3798 (Dion. 264) fol. 337v, del s. XVII, no editados aún. Después de presentar una edición crítica, se analizan en comparación con los otros poemas satíricos del autor. Se establecen así unas características de la poesía satírica de Geómetra: en cuanto a los temas, la preferencia por los ataques a la ignorancia y a la barbarización, y la presencia de mujeres como objeto satírico; en cuanto a los recursos literarios, el uso de paronomasias, quiasmos, repeticiones, poliptoton e hipérboles. Por último, se analizan los posibles contextos para varios de estos poemas, en concreto diversas formas de performance.

This article studies the poems of John Geometres, transmitted in the manuscripts Vat. Pal. gr. 367, fols. 140r-140v and 143r-143v (s. XIV in), and Athous 3798 (Dion. 264) fol. 337v (s. XVII), not edited yet. After presenting a critical edition of these poems, I will analyze them in comparison with the other satirical poems of the author. Thus, some features of Geometres’s satirical poetry are established: in terms of themes, the preference for attacks on ignorance and barbarization, and the presence of women as a satirical object; in terms of literary devices, the use of polyptoton, paronomasia, chiasmus, repetitions, and, as expected, various forms of hyperboles. Finally, we analyze the possible contexts of several of these poems, which are different forms of performance.
