21st-century societies are a clear example of globalization. Travel, migratory
flows, and the democratization of communication technologies—including social
media—have blurred borders and interwoven cultures across the globe.
In this context, the European Union was envisioned as a common project, where
its citizens could benefit from the cultural, professional, educational, and leisure
opportunities available to their fellow Europeans. However, despite a shared history,
European citizens often feel disconnected from their neighbours and either cannot or
do not wish to communicate beyond their own borders.
European bodies, such as the Council of Europe and the European Commission,
have sought to address this disconnection in recent years, particularly through
education and mobility programmes, both physical and virtual. Within this framework,
the language classroom is recognized as the ideal space to foster intercultural
communication competence among future generations.
However, the very concept of “culture” is complex to define, and the imposition
of certain cultural norms—without accounting for social or classroom-specific nuances
and realities—risks reproducing and perpetuating dynamics of oppression (Freire,
1970a; hooks, 2014). In fact, the lack of training and clear guidelines for language
teachers often leads them to replicate the approaches used in their own education,
thereby perpetuating such dynamics. This may help explain why, despite the European
Union’s efforts, today’s societies—and educational institutions—remain spaces where
discrimination and hate crimes continue to rise.
For this reason, this thesis focuses on developing an educational proposal to
foster intercultural communication competence among trainee language teachers, first
at a theoretical level and then through a case study analysis, enabling them to promote
this same competence in their future classrooms.
The results show that the students who participated in the case study, carried
out at the University of Burgos, developed intercultural awareness, critical thinking, and
are better prepared to approach the intercultural classroom from an inclusive
perspective.
Las sociedades del siglo XXI son un claro ejemplo de globalización. Los viajes,
flujos migratorios y la democratización de las tecnologías de comunicación, incluyendo
las redes sociales, han difuminado las fronteras y entremezclado las culturas a lo largo y
ancho del mundo.
En este contexto, la Unión Europea se imaginó como un proyecto común, en el
que sus ciudadanos podrían beneficiarse de las oportunidades culturales, laborales, de
estudio y de ocio de sus compatriotas. Sin embargo, y a pesar de su historia común, los
ciudadanos y ciudadanas europeos parecen sentirse muy desconectados de sus vecinos
y no pueden, o quieren, comunicarse más allá de sus fronteras.
Órganos europeos, como el Consejo de Europa o la Comisión europea, han
intentado combatir esta desazón en los últimos años, especialmente a través de la
educación y programas de movilidad, físicos o virtuales. En este contexto, reconocen el
aula de lenguas como el espacio ideal para fomentar la competencia en comunicación
intercultural entre las futuras generaciones.
Sin embargo, el mismo concepto de “cultura” es complejo de definir, y la
imposición de ciertas normas culturales, sin tener en cuenta los matices y las realidades
sociales o del aula, conlleva el riesgo de reproducir y perpetuar dinámicas de opresión
(Freire, 1970a, hooks 2014). De hecho, la falta de formación y directrices claras para el
profesorado de idiomas, da lugar a que se limiten a replicar los procesos que se siguieron
en su propia formación, replicando dichas dinámicas. Esto podría explicar que, a pesar
de los esfuerzos de la Unión Europea, las sociedades actuales, y los centros educativos,
continúen siendo espacios donde la discriminación y los crímenes de odio siguen en
aumento.
Por ello, esta tesis, se centra en desarrollar una propuesta educativa para el
desarrollo de la competencia en comunicación intercultural entre el profesorado de
idiomas en formación, primero a nivel teórico y después con un análisis de caso, de
forma que puedan fomentar esta misma competencia entre su futuro alumnado.
Los resultados demuestran que el alumnado que ha participado en el estudio de
caso, llevado a cabo en la Universidad de Burgos, ha desarrollado conciencia
intercultural, pensamiento crítico y está más preparado para hacer frente al aula
intercultural desde la inclusión.
