Como el resto de las mujeres que vivieron en la España
decimonónica, las burgalesas y riojanas que lo hicieron en la zona
limitada por los ríos Tirón y Oja, estaban sometidas a un mundo dirigido
por varones. Desde su nacimiento, pasando por la niñez y juventud,
las mujeres van cumpliendo todos los pasos que desembocan en
el matrimonio, meta final que aseguraba el mantenimiento de la fortuna
y el honor familiares.
As was the case with all women living in nineteenth-century Spain, the women of the Tirón and Oja valleys, lying between the
provinces of Burgos and Rioja, were confined in a world controlled
by men. From the moment of their birth, through their childhood and
adolescence, they faithfully fulfilled each step leading inexorably
towards the goal of marriage, the institution which ensured family
fortune and honour.
