Han sido multitud lasinvestigaciones encaminadas a comprender qué es una ciudad media y cómo puede categorizarse, planteando indicadores de muy diversos tipos, desde el tamaño y elnúmero de habitantes, a la localización, la identidad urbana, los usos del suelo, las actividades económicas o las funciones urbanas. Este artículo recupera y revisa algunosde estos estudios, clasifica los tipos de análisis más destacados sobre este tema y deja constancia de que el debate sobre la clasificación de las ciudades medias, lejos dehaberse resuelto, continúa abierto y plenamente vigente. La disparidad de criterios al respecto de cuáles son las ciudades medias españolas implica poner en cuestión laverdadera necesidad de una definición acabada sobre este fenómeno complejo y con límites difusos. In the last thirty years the Geography and other related sciences in the territorial study have dealt profusely with Spanish medium-size cities, with the aim to achieve anidentification of their socioeconomic reality and of the urban guidelines that allow to elucidate the current concept on this issue. So many have been the investigationscarried out in this field with the double purpose of understanding what by medium-size city is meant and how it can be categorized, raising different type of indicators, fromsize and number of inhabitants, location, urban identity, urban land use, to economic activities and, finally, the urban functions. Thus, this article reviews the previousstudies, classifies the most relevant analysis for this situation and ascertain that the debate on the definition of a medium-size city, far from being worked out, continuesfully in force.
