Los estudios sobre pasajeros al Nuevo Mundo durante esta época desde la provincia de Burgos, no han despertado el interés de los investigadores hasta la fecha, por lo tanto, el presente trabajo pretende llenar este vacío. En una primera fase introductoria, se acomete un estudio analítico y descriptivo del medio físico, demográfico, poblacional e histórico, donde queda reflejada su importancia desde el mismo momento de su nacimiento entre los farallones defensivos del fragoso reducto norteño, hasta alcanzar el Siglo de las luces. En el discurso de nuestro trabajo, hemos analizado este fenómeno mediante la utilización de una metodología cuantitativa y cualitativa. Con la primera, hemos llegado a conocer quiénes y cuantas fueron las personas que emigraron. A tenor de los resultados obtenidos, podemos afirmar que el número de individuos que procedentes de Las Merindades partieron hacia el Nuevo Mundo durante el siglo XVIII, fue sustancialmente superior al considerado hasta el momento por otros autores que han utilizado la documentación emanada de los organismos oficiales, por lo que cabe interpretar que hubo una gran cantidad de emigración ilegal. A este respecto, hemos podido localizar 822 individuos que cruzaron el Atlántico en busca de una vida mejor, así como identificar la práctica totalidad de sus lugares de origen. Aunque se trata de uno de los datos menos detallados con los que contamos, también hemos obtenido estadísticas relativas a sus destinos americanos, así como las que tienen que ver con la edad, sexo, estado y ocupación. Los detalles físicos y distintivos ofrecidos por los funcionarios de la Casa de la Contratación sobre los emigrantes montañeses, nos han permitido la elaboración de un retrato robot de los mismos, su “biotipo”. No obstante, éramos conscientes de las limitaciones que la metodología cuantitativa ofrecía para adentrarnos en otras variables de interés que consideramos de importancia vital, tales como las emociones, las particularidades de cada historia, las motivaciones, etc. Ha sido la metodología cualitativa la que ha permitido ahondar en estos asuntos y profundizar en estas experiencias, mediante el análisis de la correspondencia privada que mantuvieron entre un continente y otro. A lo largo de toda la centuria, especialmente en la segunda mitad de ella, fueron llegando a la región de Las Merindades legados y presentes procedentes de los emigrantes originarios de las mismas. De manera especial destinados a las iglesias y a las ermitas del entorno, así como cantidades a familiares y otras destinadas a obras públicas, principalmente debidas a motivos de promoción personal, exhibición del éxito, piedad, deseo de beneficiar a los convecinos y hacerlos copartícipes de su triunfo. The present thesis dissertation is framed within the studies of peninsular emigration to America, that took place in the northermost region within Burgos province called “Las Merindades” in the eighteenth century. The studies about travellers to the New World during this time from the province of Burgos have not arisen the interest of researchers to date, therefore, the present work aims to fill this gap in the knowledge. An analytical and descriptive study of the physical surroundings, demography, population and historical environment has been undertaken as an introductory phase. This preliminary chapter tries to highlight the importance of Las Merindades from the moment of its birth, between the defensive cliffs of the northern stronghold, to the Century of the lights. This phenomenon has been analysed in the present research by using a quantitative and qualitative methodology in order to know who and how many people emigrated to America. Based on the outcome of this investigation, it can be confirmed that the population from Las Merindades who travelled to the New World is substantially greater than that considered by previous authors who collected the information from official resources. This leads this author to think that there was a large amount of illegal emigration. In this regard, it has been possible to gather personal information and the places of origin of 822 people who crossed the Atlantic in search of a better life. This author has also managed to collect statics related to age, sex, status, occupation and the American destinations. However, this latter information is one of the least detailed data collected. The physical and distinctive details offered by the officials of La Casa de Contratación regarding the highlander emigrants allowed this author to prepare a composite portrait of them. Nevertheless, this author was aware of the limitations that the quantitative methodology offered to deepen into other variables that can be considered of vital importance such as emotions, the particularities of each story, their motivations etc. The qualitative methodology is the one that allowed this researcher to delve into these experiences through the analysis of the private correspondence between the travelers and their relatives between one continent and another. Throughout the entire century, particularly in the latter second half, legacies and gifts from the emigrated travelers arrived to Las Merindades region.
