potential triggers of humour, misunderstandings that can result and expected understandings that can produce the opposite intended effect. We will focus on representations about communication, the immigrants’ own learning processes and their relationship with the host society. We will also discuss the ceremonial aspect that involves any interaction between a native and non-native person, and we will comment
on possible situations that can be perceived as threats to “save face” and how to
avoid such encounters.</dim:field>
