This study is based on the experience of lvorian students of
Spanish as a Foreign. Language at the University of Cocody who
read two excerpts from the novel La bastarda (2016), by the
Equatorial Guinean writer Trifonia Melibea Obono. Reading the
texts triggered unique responses from the students regarding the
concept of motherhood in Africa. The students compared the
literary representations in the excerpts with their own experiences
and ideas in assigned compositions. We analyzed the 36
compositions written by the students to examine how they
conceive of the mother figure. Basing our study on Homi K.
Bhabha's idea of hybridity as "the interstitial passage between fixed
identifications [that] opens the possibility of a cultural hybridity
that entertains difference without an assumed or imposed
hierarchy" (6), we explore the testimonial nuances around the
notion of motherhood in Africa and affirm the diversity of cultures
in the classroom that challenge fixed and dominant preconceptions.
