Puellae Doctae en las cortes peninsulares

Abstract

Desde finales del siglo XV, fue apareciendo un destacable grupo de mujeres jóvenes brillantes que, apodadas entre sus contemporáneos como Puellae doctae, formaron parte de los círculos cortesanos y participaron en el proyecto renacentista. Este trabajo trata de explicar cómo fue posible este hecho que se desarrolló no sólo en las cortes europeas sino también en las cortes de los reinos peninsulares. Entre las causas favorecedoras de este fenómeno se encuentra, en primer lugar, el interés por el conocimiento y difusión de las lenguas clásicas que había despertado el Renacimiento y que permitió el resurgimiento de la educación femenina. En segundo lugar, también se debió al mecenazgo desarrollado por reinas, virreinas e infantas españolas y, en tercer lugar, y de tanta o más importancia, como dejó escrito alguna de ellas, «al sudor y constantes vigilias» o, como subrayó otra, «por mi industria, estudios y trabajos. ________________ A significant group of talented and brilliant women emerged at the end of the 15th century, identified as Puellae Doctae. Many of them lived at the court and participated in the general Renaissance project. This essay attempts to describe this phenomenon that extended not only through European courts, but also those of the peninsular realm. Several reasons contributed to the rise and multiplication of these groups of women. First, the Renaissance interest for knowledge and the spreading of classic languages that allowed a women´s education revival. Second, the Spanish queens, virreinas and infantas´s sponsorship and thirdly, also very important, the efforts of all of these valiant women. As one of them wrote, her achievement was due to her «sweat and constant vigils» and, as another also noted, to «my labour, studies and hard work.
