El barrio de San Pedro de la Fuente: un espacio a destiempo en la ciudad de Burgos

Abstract

El barrio de San Pedro de la Fuente surgió como sustento productivo del asentamiento defensivo que se estableció en el cerro del Castillo de Burgos. Fundada en el 884, la identidad de la ciudad fue alterándose con el paso del tiempo. Progresivamente, Barrioeras –denominación inicial del barrio- fue alejándose, en principio identitariamente y después en cuanto a su desarrollo, del devenir de la ciudad. Según va creciendo el municipio, San Pedro va quedando descolgado de los sucesivos avances económicos, sociales y urbanos, llegando a ser un arrabal heredero de su marginalidad medieval hasta ya entrado el siglo XXI. A lo largo de este trabajo, se analiza la evolución de San Pedro de la Fuente en el contexto espacial y temporal de la ciudad de Burgos, sirviéndose de la historia como hilo diacrónico de un estudio de geografía urbana, en el que se consideran las circunstancias e hitos que van creando y reforzando esa desigualdad respecto a la ciudad histórica. El análisis de la historia de Burgos y de las principales iniciativas de planeamiento y desarrollo urbano servirán para entender todo lo que vio pasar por delante un barrio que parecía estar condenado a que el progreso no le afectase o lo hiciera ya tarde, de ahí que sea considerado un espacio a destiempo

The neighborhood of San Pedro de la Fuente emerged as a productive livelihood of the defensive settlement which was established on the hillock where the Castle of Burgos is located. Founded in 884, the identity of the city was gradually changing. Progressively, Barrioeras - as the neighborhood was initially called – was moving away at first in terms of identity and then in terms of its development from the transformation of the city. As the city was growing, San Pedro was lagging behind the following – up economic, social and urban expansions and finally became a suburb that could not come out the marginalization until the beginning of the twenty first century. Throughout this thesis, the analysis of the evolution of San Pedro de la Fuente in the spatial and temporal context of the city of Burgos is presented by using history as diachronic tool of a urban geography study that contemplate the circumstances and milestones which create and strengthen the inequality regarding the historic city. The analysis of the history of Burgos and the main initiatives of planning and urban development will serve to understand everything the neighborhood has been through considering that it seemed to be doomed not to progress or to progress too late. That is why it is said that this area was developing out of time.
