El monasterio de Vallbona de les Monges ha sido desde su incorporación al Cister en 1175
el cenobio femenino más importante de Cataluña, recibiendo privilegios que le permitieron
erigirse como un centro eclesiástico independiente, siendo filial directa de Citeaux.
No obstante, con el paso de las centurias y, especialmente a partir del siglo XVI con el
Concilio de Trento hasta el siglo XXI, acontecerán numerosas dificultades donde bajo el
báculo de la abadesa las monjas han logrado una “adaptabilidad” al contexto histórico que
han prolongado la subsistencia de la vida monacal así como la buena conservación
patrimonial hasta nuestros días.
Since 1175 when it became a membership of the Cister, the Vallbona de les Monges
monastery has been the Catalonia´s most important female abbay, receiving privileges that
allowed it to become as an independent catholic institution being a direct affiliated of
Citeaux.
However, through the centuries, and especially between the Trento Concilium in the XVI
century and the XXI century, the monastery had to face many difficulties, but under the
command of the abess, who knew how to adapt the monastic life of the nuns to the
historical context, achieved to prolong its activity and allowed to keep the heritage in
optimal condition.
