The effect of subcritical water, without co-solvent addition, as well as modified with ethanol (20
% and 40 % v/v), on the hydrolysis of a mixed wheat-barley straw agro-industrial residue (175
°C, 40 bar, 60 min), was evaluated through characterization of the liquid and solid streams and
an integrated structural mass balance. Ethanol attenuated hemicellulose autohydrolysis and
reduced furfural and formic acid formation (-60.3 % and -46.1 % relative to subcritical water).
Lignin removal did not differ significantly between treatments (p = 0.09), but the highest ethanol
proportion reduced the retention of acid-insoluble lignin (p = 0.018), evidence of a second
mechanism independent of carbohydrate protection. Glucans remained mostly retained in the
solid, whereas pentosan removal decreased as the ethanol proportion increased relative to
pure subcritical water. The profile obtained with 40 % ethanol, richer in cellulose and with a
structurally less complex lignin, proved the most suitable precursor for subsequent
fractionation into nanocellulose.
