<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">The objective of this study is to set out a plausible proposal for an approach to the origin of the principle “Ignorance of the law excuses no one from compliance therewith”. It is obvious that its origin can be traced back to Roman Law, probably at the end of the Roman Republic, as a consequence of a jurisprudential controversy. The formal structure of this study follows the plan of starting with the current legal situation in Spanish Law, to return forthwith to its origin in the Roman legal order and its subsequent reception up until the present day.</dim:field>
