In 1938 several hundred International
Brigadists were incarcerated in a concentration
camp at the monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña
(Burgos). Behind the initiative was the figure of
doctor Vallejo-Nájera and his desire to detect the
“red gene” which, according to his theory, afflicted
the defenders of the Spanish Republic. Following
the creation of a Cabinet of Psychological
Research, with the personal blessing of General
Franco himself, the supposed objective of re –
education quickly degenerated into repression,
humiliation and forced labour. Ultimately, the
Francoist government would use the Brigadists
as bargaining chips and propaganda scapegoats
for their “Nueva España”.
