<mods:abstract>This study analyses networks of power and patronage in seventeenth-century Europe through
the career of General Ottavio Piccolomini within the context of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–
1648). Adopting an approach that combines microhistory, prosopography, and social network
analysis (SNA), it examines how familial, military, and political relationships shaped his career
within complex, multi-layered structures of power.
The study centres on the concept of service to the sovereign as a negotiated process, particularly
in the case of foreign actors serving in Habsburg armies, whose advancement depended not
only on military performance but also on their ability to mobilise networks of patronage and
mediation. An analysis of the Italian general Ottavio Piccolomini’s connections demonstrates
that his personal and professional trajectory cannot be explained solely in individual terms or
by military success alone. Rather, it emerged from the interaction between different spheres of
power –court, army, and family networks– within which the circulation of information and the
exchange of favours were commonplace.
It further shows how the architecture of power within Habsburg political environments was
structured through flexible yet hierarchical networks. Within these settings, membership of a
particular relational sphere could determine the course of an individual’s cursus honorum.
Depending on the faction or network to which one belonged, a military career might prove more
or less successful. Political fluctuations within these environments directly shaped relational
dynamics and the bonds associated with them.
Accordingly, investigating this structure, intrinsic to the circles of influence surrounding such
individuals, requires a combination of methodological approaches capable of capturing the full
range of ties and the diversity of connections. This is addressed through a taxonomic study of
this corpus of interactions, enabling the reconstruction of different levels of connection within
the network surrounding Ottavio Piccolomini, as well as an assessment of his role as a key node
within the broader matrix of Habsburg governance.</mods:abstract>
