El proceso, aunque tiene una dinámica que arranca más pronto, tiene su inicio efectivo en el siglo V d.n.e., cuando el Imperio Romano termina por desaparecer como realidad jurídico-política. Sin embargo, la instauración de los nuevos reinos germánicos no constituyó el final de un modo de vida forjado durante siglos por él. Determinar cuándo, cómo y por qué se produce la ruptura definitivita de ese sistema social, y definir las características estructurales de la nueva organización social que la sustituye a partir del siglo X d.n.e. constituye el tema de esta investigación, inserta en el debate historiográfico sobre la mutación feudal y la caracterización del feudalismo en Castilla. This research is focused on the process of transition between the social structures imposed by the Roman Empire until reaching a new social formation: the feudal. These are characteristics of the Middle Ages. This process, although it has an earlier dynamic, it actually starts in the 5th century, just when the Roman Empire disappeared as a political reality. Nevertheless, the creation of the new Germanic kingdoms did not end this Roman way of living, which had been imposed for centuries. This paper deals with the issues of when, how and why the final breaking of this social organization arrives, and explains the structural characters of this new social organization, which changed those previous to the 10th century.
