Desde finales de los años 1920, época en la que Diego
Angulo dió sus primeros pasos en la carrera científica (1), las citas de
obras flamencas en pinturas castellanas de finales del siglo XV y
comienzos del siglo XVI han sido estudiadas a menudo. No es sorprendente,
ya que estas citas presentan un innegable interés. Cuando
el historiador del arte establece una relación entre una obra flamenca
y una pintura castellana, apoyándose en analogías suficientemente
concretas que le permiten excluir una casual convergencia de inspiración,
entonces puede reconstruir un verdadero hecho histórico.
El vínculo, una vez demostrado, posee el mismo valor probatorio que
un documento de archivo y posibilita afirmar que un artista, activo
en la Península Ibérica, tuvo como fuente de inspiración una pintura
flamenca.
Flemish pictures, especially those by Rogier Van der
Weyden (1399-1464), played a key-role as models for Castilian pain -
ters at the end of the 15th century. But these models had to be adap -
ted to the local taste. In this article, Castilian interpretations of
Rogier Van der Weyden's Durán Madonna (Madrid, Museo Nacional
del Prado), attributed to the Master of the Luna's and his companions,
have been systematically investigated. They reflect an aesthetic
attitude aiming primarily at ornamental effects, which differs from
Van der Weyden's sculptural realism, based on perspective. This
trans formation of Flemish painting in Castilla had as a counterpart
the transformation of some Castilian painters in true imitators of
the northern masters The case of Diego de la Cruz can be considered
as very illuminating from this point of vue. Having worked a long
time as painter of Spanish retablos with gold ground, short before
1495, at the end of his career, he realized a Flemish looking triptych
for the cloister of the Burgos cathedral.
