Villanueva de Teba y el gobernador de Tucumán Gaspar Varona

Gaspar Varona es un personaje burgalés desconocido,
nacido en la actual Villanueva de Teba. Su carrera política y militar
culminó en el reinado de Felipe V al ser nombrado gobernador de
Tucumán (Argentina). Allí se distinguió por practicar una política
pacifista con los pueblos indígenas del Chaco. El ejercicio de su cargo
le permitió reunir cuantiosos bienes, invertidos en Perú en obras
piadosas o enviados a sus familiares para fundar una capilla y tres
capellanías en la iglesia de su pueblo natal. Asimismo, fue benefactor
de la mencionada parroquia a la que donó numerosas piezas litúrgicas
de plata.
Gaspar Varona is an unknown character, born in the now
called Villanueva de Teba. His political and military career culmina -
ted in the reign of Philip V became Governor of Tucuman (Argentina).
There he distinguished himself due to his pacifist policy with indi -
genous peoples of de Chaco. The performance of his duties allowed
him to gather substantial assets, invested in Peru in pious works or
sent their families to found a chapel and three chantries in the church
of his hometown. He was also a benefactor of the above-mentioned
parish to which he donated numerous liturgical pieces of silver.
