La presente contribución persigue profundizar en el
conocimiento del papel que el Canal de Castilla desempeñó en la dinamización socioeconómica de la zona que atraviesa su Ramal Norte
a través de la consideración de un fenómeno de particular interés:
la aparición, en torno a su trazado, de nuevos enclaves habitados,
emplazados sobre la base de antiguos despoblados bajomedievales o
asociados a importantes obras de ingeniería, a establecimientos industriales o a puntos estratégicos para la navegación. Surgidas a
finales del siglo XVIII respondiendo a los planteamientos del reformismo
ilustrado, estas poblaciones de nueva creación no lograron
prosperar (salvo Alar del Rey), si bien representan un elocuente testimonio
de la amplia proyección territorial que alcanzó esta magna
obra pública sobre el espacio, en un intento racional de transformar
y reorganizar el paisaje poblacional preexistente.
The present paper aims to deepen the understanding
of the role the Castile Channel played in the socio-economic revitalization of its North Branch, through the consideration of a interesting phenomenon: the appearance, around its path, of new towns,
on the basis of late medieval depopulated places or associated to
engineering works, industrial establishments or strategic points for navigation. Emerged in the late eighteenth century in response to the
approach of enlightened reformism, these newly created villages
failed to thrive (except Alar del Rey), although they represent an
eloquent testimony to the wide territorial projection reached by this
great public work on the space, in a rational attempt to transform
and reorganize the existing population landscape.
