<dim:field mdschema="dc" element="description" qualifier="abstract" lang="en">Historically, in Old Castile, there were large regions
devoid of trees – a natural resource that was essential for supplying
firewood to the local populations. This deficiency was much more
severe in cities where the demand for fuel was higher. Beginning in
the High Middle Ages, the Montes de Oca Region –a very prominent
forest area near the city of Burgos– became the territory on which
the lords and powerful men of the city set their sights and from which
the residents of the neighboring regions got their firewood supply.
All this gave rise to intense fragmentation that was left at the mercy
of council and monastery boards, as well as to the subsequent set of
grievances and special agreements which ensued from the fourteenth
to the seventeenth centuries.</dim:field>
