in the Montes de Oca region and under the jurisdictions of Cerezo
de Río Tirón and Belorado. Throughout its long history, it would
be owned by all types of lords and masters: the lesser nobility,
the Sarmientos, convents, bureaucrats, and the new nobility that
sprung up through business. It even saw, as its last occupants, the
Marquises of Villacastel de Carrias. The nature of this lordship was dictated both by the unique municipal charter of 1326, which defined
relations between lords and vassals, and by the subsequent
dynamics of its council, obliged at various critical junctures to use
part of its assets for perpetual emphyteutic leases that strengthened
the position of the different lords. Faced with this reality, Castil de
Carrias’s jurisdictional freedom from Cerezo de Río Tirón and Belorado
was of less importance.</dim:field>
