El molino de Manuel Rodríguez, curtidor. Éxitos y fracasos en el Burgos del setecientos

En 1748, se desata una polémica intensa, y agria, entre
el maestro tanador y curtidor Manuel Rodríguez, residente en el
periférico barrio de San Pedro de la Fuente, y el comerciante de
paños y sedas, y “empresario” lanero, Santiago Núñez Monedero,
afincado en la céntrica calle La Paloma. El artesano postuló ante el
Concejo, y llevó a cabo, la edificación de un molino en las inmediaciones
del puente de Malatos que el mercader impugnó por afirmar
que perjudicaba sus intereses profesionales. El “Pleito” se complicó
con la intervención, también, de los capellanes de los Reales Compases
de Las Huelgas, empeñados en proteger la construcción de
otro molino en una ubicación cercana. Esta problemática permite
reconstruir, a mi juicio, además de la polémica puramente urbanística,
una pendencia manifiesta entre dos maneras de ser burgalés,
la del “vil” artesano y la del honorable comerciante.
In 1748, an intense and bitter controversy broke out
between master tanner and tanner Manuel Rodríguez, resident in
the peripheral district of San Pedro de la Fuente, and the merchant
of cloth and silks, and “businessman” of the wool, Santiago Núñez
Monedero, settled in the central street La Paloma. The artisan
postulated before the Council, and carried out, the construction of a mill in the vicinity of the bridge of Malatos that the merchant
impugned to claim that it harmed their professional interests.
The “Lawsuit” was complicated by the intervention, also, of the
chaplains of the Royal Compasses of Las Huelgas, determined to
protect the construction of another mill in a nearby location. This
problem allows to reconstruct, in my opinion, in addition to the
purely urbanistic polemic, a manifest pendency between two ways
of being from Burgos, that of the “vile” artisan and that of the
honorable merchant.
