León Cathedral underwent huge transformations during the baroque period although the majority of these alterations were reversed during a subsequent renovation in the nineteenth century.
The principal objective was to modernise the cathedral’s image, adapting it the new liturgical,
ideological, and aesthetic needs of the moment. The historic medieval exterior was thus altered
by the addition of baroque features. We were able to identify only a few disparate remains of the
alterations that took place, and these have been analysed to gain a better overview of the works
undertaken in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
