The progress of biotechnology over the past few decades has played a crucial role in
multiple fields such as medicine, agriculture and industry. However, this development has
always been surrounded by controversy in diverse sectors of society, granting
biotechnology a prominent position among the socioscientific issues: social controversies
presenting a scientific foundation that comprise other ethical, political, environmental and
social concerns. In such context, scientific literacy —STEM competence in the current
educational legislation— becomes essential in order to understand the underlying
scientific framework and evaluate the implications of these controversies in other areas.
The main goal of this work has been to present an innovative educational proposal for 4th
graders of secondary education that provides students with a scenario to engage with
socioscientific issues in the field of biotechnology from a critical perspective, thus
enabling the development of the necessary skills for an informed and participatory
citizenship. The proposal, which integrates elements of Project-Based Learning along
with the use of real news and information and communication technologies, has been
implemented during the course of the practicum, receiving positive feedback from the
students.
