Durante los años 1999-2003 realizamos una prospección arqueológica de cobertura total, con el objetivo de conocer los patrones de asentamiento prehistóricos en el entorno de la Sierra de Atapuerca.
Se localizaron 181 asentamientos prehistóricos en una superficie de 314 km2. Con un trabajo de esta envergadura, uno se plantea como siguiente paso evaluar diferentes métodos
arqueológicos existentes, para contrastar resultados. En este artículo comparamos por un lado nuestros resultados con los obtenidos mediante prospección selectiva por la administración para
su Inventario Arqueológico Provincial en un mismo término municipal burgalés, Ibeas de Juarros. Por otro lado, diseñamos un muestreo aleatorio sobre nuestra área de estudio para valorar la representatividad
de este método, pudiendo comparar nuestros datos con los que hubiéramos obtenido muestreando.
Una vez cotejados los resultados de metodologías diferentes-prospección intensiva vs selectiva, y prospección intensiva vs muestreo, concluimos con la afirmación de que para cualquier trabajo
de investigación que persiga unos resultados inferenciales sobre patrones de asentamiento, se deben desarrollar trabajos de inspección del terreno objeto del estudio lo más intensivos posibles,
llegando a documentar la mayor cantidad de evidencias que aseguren la representatividad de los datos.
In-depth archaeological surveys were conducted between 1999 and 2003 with a view to understanding the prehistoric settlement patterns in and around Sierra de Atapuerca. We located 181 prehistoric
settlements in a 314 km2 area. Working on such a large scale, it was decided that the next step would be the assessment of different existing archaeological methods to contrast the results.
In this article, we compare our results with those of the Public Administration, which used selective surveys for its Provincial Archaeological Inventory in the same municipality, Ibeas de Juarros.
We also designed a random sample in our study area in order to test the representativity of this method, comparing our data with what would have been yielded by samples.
After contrasting the results yielded by different methodologies (intensive vs. selective surveys, and intensive surveys vs. sampling), we conclude that any research work that pursues results with
inferential conclusions about settlement patterns must undertake inspection work on the ground in the study area with the highest possible intensity, documenting the largest possible amount of
evidence to ensure that the data are fully representative.
