_________________________________ This dissertation is based on the literary and conceptual analysis of a selection of the Northern Irish Brian Moore. Exiled in North America, this novelist utilizes exile as a conducting thread in a good deal of his narrative work, as a central base to contrast tradition and modernity, and as a platform to portray his image of Ireland and the eternal fight of individuals to define their identity. The study examines Moore’s marginal, artistic and ontological perspectives of exile, respectively exploring marginality, the artist’s figure and the exile’s search for identity, and achieving two fundamental purposes: to show the potentiality of postcolonial theory to interpret Irish literature and Moore himself and to explain the burden of the past, constantly updated through an obsession with place memory, as an underlying reason for the apparent irreversibility of his personal and literary past. | |
