During the thirteenth century, the Cistercian convent of Santa María de Cañas, through a series of purchases, acquired the whole of what had previously been the village of Hormilleja. The land that constituted the estate was bought from a group of noblemen referred to in our sources as ‘the knights of Hormilleja’, whose disappearance from the village was perhaps a result of the end of the conflict between Castile and Navarre which had previously given the village a strategic importance it no longer had, the knights relocating to nearby towns of greater socio-economic relevance. The abbesses of Cañas installed a priest in the village to oversee both the running of the estate and the spiritual well-being of the villagers grouped around the parish church of Santa Catalina. At the end of the thirteenth century, the joint population of Hormilleja and the neighbouring hamlet of Ruego would have been approximately one hundred, though the latter would become deserted as a result of the Black Death. Eventually Ruego would be absorbed into the nuns’ de facto jurisdiction of Hormilleja, though the lands were in theory under royal jurisdiction, and such jurisdictional uncertainty would persist until the late seventeenth century when Carlos II finally sold the Crown’s rights, the abbey thus finally acquiring full jurisdiction over the estate.
