In this paper we explore the trajectory of the Castilian businessman Ángel Martinez and how it reflects on different aspects of life in Spain at the end of the Ancien Regime period and beginnings of the modern world. Many of these questions have been treated before, but Martinez’s career affords us some interesting new perspectives, living as he did at a time of great political, economic and social upheaval to which he necessarily had to adapt and did so with notable success in the period of transition between the old and new ways of life and ways of doing business.
