El presente estudio analiza el proceso de retorno a España del séquito de la infanta
Catalina Micaela tras su fallecimiento en Turín en noviembre de 1597. A partir de crónicas
de la época y fondos del Archivo General de Simancas, se examina cómo la desaparición de
la infanta dejó a su casa sin un horizonte estable, situación agravada por las ausencias de su
esposo, el duque Carlos Manuel I, la inestabilidad política y la precariedad económica en
Saboya. El análisis detalla un viaje terrestre de regreso marcado por la incertidumbre, el
luto y el avance de la peste, que culminó tras meses de difi cultades logísticas y económicas
al integrarse la comitiva en las galeras de la reina Margarita de Austria que zarpaban para
España. En última instancia, este episodio sirve como microcosmo de la crisis estructural
que comenzaba a afectar tanto a la Corte de Saboya como a la Corona española a fi nales
del siglo XVI.
This study examines the return to Spain of Infanta Catalina Micaela’s household following
her death in Turin in November 1597. Drawing on period chronicles and records from the
General Archive of Simancas, it explores how the Infanta’s passing left her entourage without
a stable future, a situation exacerbated by the absence of his husband, Duke Charles Emmanuel I, political instability, and the scarcity of resources in Savoy. The narrative details a return journey
defi ned by uncertainty, mourning, and the spread of the plague, which fi nally concluded after
months of logistical hardships when the retinue joined the galleys of Margaret of Austria.
Ultimately, this episode serves as a microcosm of the structural crisis that was beginning
to affect both the Savoyard court and the Spanish Crown at the close of the sixteenth century.
